Art21 News

If you've scrolled past us in your Twitter feed recently, or watched our film clips on Facebook, you may have noticed a few changes here at Art21. That's because on March 9, we unveiled our new look and digital home, complete with an updated logo and website at art21.org.

As Richard Serra says in an Art21 Exclusive, "Artists invent strategies that allow themselves to see in a way that they haven't seen before," and it's our hope that this website will be an enduring tool for seeing contemporary art in new ways.

Art21's New Look

Art21.org is not just a digital footprint, it's our home! As an organization that exists primarily in the broadcast and digital space, Art21.org serves our audience's needs in the same way that a museum's building houses its collection.

With a refresh of Art21's visual identity and a redesigned Art21.org, you can easily discover more than 150 innovative artists, and explore over 50 hours of video, with each film displayed alongside hand-selected curated content. Create a Watchlist and collect videos to watch later, or watch a Playlist--thematic groupings of films curated by staff, educators, and guest contributors.

New Videos Featuring Jamian Juliano-Villani & Minerva Cuevas

Jamian Juliano-Villani's Field Work
Premiered March 17, as part of the Art21 digital series New York Close Up

Artist Jamian Juliano-Villani scours Manhattan in search of inspiration for the unpredictable imagery that fills her paintings, first prowling the Strand Bookstore and later touring Ripley's Believe It or Not! in Times Square.

"I think anyone that is an artist is constantly feeling the guilt of [the pretensions of art-making]," says the artist, "so that's why I like these other weird elements of life."

Minerva Cuevas: Bridging Borders
Premiered March 24, as part of the Art21 digital series Exclusive

Minerva Cuevas considers the implications of President Trump's proposed border wall, and reflects on her 2010 work Crossing of the Rio Bravo, in which the artist painted a bridge across a riverbed that divides Mexico and the United States.

"Books and projects can be important, but they won't be a solution," says Cuevas. "The problems or the crisis in the world is generated by everybody. So it has to be also a massive reaction."

Highlights from the Art21 Magazine

From the March / April "Balance" issue:

● Lindsay Preston Zappas reviews Kathleen Ryan's recent sculpture exhibition, calling it a "reclamation of feminine modernism."

● Zachary Small uncovers the psychological implications of Beverly Fishman's paintings, which explore the consequences of an unchecked medical industry.
