DesignArts Utah ’16, is a juried exhibition highlighting the varied work of designers currently living in Utah. DesignArts annual exhibitions feature selections of designs, prototypes, and produced samples by designers in Utah’s various design fields. Works of 18 designers were selected by nationally recognized juror Jim Childress, and range from lighting design, furniture, skis, architecture, a wooden stereo, a tumbleweed lamp, a pour-over coffee stand, and more.
The exhibition closing reception and celebration is October 21, 2016 from 6-9 pm during Salt Lake Gallery Stroll and will coincide with Salt Lake Design Week.

Inspired by artists past and present who are known for iterations (Cezanne, Monet, and Jasper Johns, to name a few), Sue Martin and Nancy Vorm give viewers a glimpse into their creative processes, both intensely introspective and playful. Sue Martin selected a single photograph taken on a trip to Zion National Park in February. She reflected on the times she has stopped at that very place, each time with a different travel companion, to snap a picture. Geological layering and erosion became a metaphor for layering and erosion of memory. “After three paintings, I set the photo aside and worked from memory,” Martin said. “Without all that detail in front of me, I could select those elements that were most memorable and play with color, line, and texture that expressed the essence of the memory.” Nancy Vorm’s abstract encaustic paintings incorporate inks, rust, monotype prints, and collaged elements to create a surface that is richly textured through many layers of beeswax. Her iterative journey began when a friend gave her some rusted metal pieces in flower shapes. With a roll of her eyes that said, “I don’t do flowers,” she nevertheless began to imagine ways to make the motif her own. Printing the rusted objects on paper, and using walnut and India inks on Kozo papers, she began to add patterns, then to overlap and layer elements, until the motif was less a flower and more a shape and texture to incorporate into her many-layered abstractions. Vorm’s use of Martin’s “layer” motif in some of her pieces was a nod to the collaborative spirit the two artists developed over the five months of working together.
Additionally the Alice Gallery will be open as part of Avenues Open Studios on Saturday, September 24, 2016, 11am-3pm.

The state of Utah's permanent art collection includes many of these depictions, and Architecture of Place assembles 20 of these works at the Alice Gallery for a survey of the subject. And while it only features 20 pieces from a collection of over 1,400, it's nevertheless a remarkable distillation."
Architecture of Place takes a look at depictions of various structures and environments highlighted in the State of Utah Fine Art and Folk Art Collection.

MEET THE JURORS
STATEWIDE ANNUAL '16
|

This month we're introducing you to our second esteemed juror for Statewide Annual, Utah '16: Mixed Media and Works on Paper.
Jim Robischon is the owner and director of Robischon Gallery in Denver, CO. He has been an art dealer and gallery owner in Denver, Colorado, for over forty years. Hundreds of exhibits have been mounted over these four decades, including solo shows for historically important artists such as Christo, Judy Pfaff, Ann Hamilton, Robert Motherwell, Robert Rauschenberg, Richard Serra, Bernar Venet and Manuel Neri. Robischon’s gallery program includes international, national, and regional artists as well, along with a continuing mission to present both emerging and mid-career artists in order to highlight and emphasize the broader artistic discourse. In the early 1990’s Robischon founded Denver’s Lower Downtown Arts District, The Denver Gallery Guide, The Denver Art Dealers Association and the city’s First Friday’s gallery art events. In 1996, Robischon was selected as one of only three American dealers to represent works from the Estate of Robert Motherwell. He has raised significant funds for acquisitions for the Modern & Contemporary Art Department of the Denver Art Museum over the years, including for artwork on long term loan for the White House in the Jacqueline Kennedy Garden.

Laura Durham has accepted a new position at KUED Channel-7 in their Creative Services Department. Laura worked in the visual arts program for 12 years where she was instrumental in establishing the Rio Gallery as a free exhibition space for Utah's artists. Most recently she has worked in marketing and communications to unify the division's branding and communicate the public value arts and museums bring to Utahns. If you see her out in the community, please give her a warm congratulations. She will be missed. |
