Should government be involved in funding the arts and humanities?

 Yes

Please explain your answer (one or two sentences is sufficient):

Art and culture enriches lives of citizens through dance, visual arts, music, history.....As the wealthiest  nation I believe we can and should support them, especially endeavors that bring art and culture to underserved communities. I personally was involved in after school visual arts programs throughout my primary and secondary education and benefited immensely.

If your elected office could impact the amount of money spent on public K-12 arts & humanities education, what would you choose to do?

Yes

Do you support the designation of Robert Smithson's Spiral Jetty as the State Work of Art?

 Unsure

Please explain your answer to (one or two sentences is sufficient):

I would need to know more about this. Property tax funds education in part, especially in my district where a lot of new growth occurs.  If other non profits were exempt then I would support it. I also believe in a variable property tax rate and would support non profits from paying the full tax rate.

Would you support a minor increase to bed or tourism taxes to fund more cultural districts in your community?

Yes

Please explain your answer (one or two sentences is sufficient):

Right now we need to redistribute where the current TRT money goes. This is a state issue. There is already plenty of available money in this fund to go to badly needed infrastructure and other areas, and instead it is recycled into more advertising. Arts and culture could also be a valuable recipient of this fund. Public mural projects can really help to revitalize a downtown for instance.

Last year the state legislature passed a bill (HB223 Local Historic District Amendments) restricting the creation of historical districts. What are your thoughts about historic preservation? (One or two sentences is sufficient).

I grew up in a pre civil war house in Maryland, and spend my childhood exploring historic homes throughout the East coast. I currently am restoring a 100 year farmhouse. Developers in Moab knocked down a historic home recently to build another Marriot and I was appalled. Historic districts are good for tourism and good for the pride of residents, they are not simply old buildings. They deserve our respect.
