He earned his BFA degree in graphic design from the University of Utah, where he also studied figure drawing with Alvin Gittens. He received his MFA in design communications at the University of Illinois, where he taught figure drawing and watercolor.
Larry began plein air panting in 2001 when he was commissioned to create a suite of paintings of Utah's scenic landscapes. The paintings were featured in the Official Utah Travel Guide - Olympic Edition. He enjoyed a sold-out showing of the paintings during the Utah Winter Olympics, and subsequently received invitations to exhibit at galleries in Utah, Colorado and Arizona.
Larry won Best of Show at the first annual Maynard Dixon Country Plein Air Invitational, and his work has been featured in Southwest Art and other painting magazines. He has participated in numerous painting invitationals, and is the recipient of honors and cash awards at plein air festivals through out the west. His plein-air and larger studio paintings are included in numerous public, private and corporate collections.
Larry's paintings are recognized for their strong sense of design, innovative color and texture. He paints in oil with a palette knife, using no medium. HIs unique work and bio are featured in the book.Painters of Utah's Canyons and Deserts. Larry also wrote the artist's introduction and designed the award-wining book.
Larry is an ardent outdoors person, His painting forays are usually tied to his hiking, backpacking, kayaking and backcountry skiing adventures. He particularly enjoys painting the mountains surrounding his home in Salt Lake City, as well as the high desert plateau near his cabin near Capitol Reef in southern Utah.
