Few recording artists are as creative and prolific as Bruce Cockburn. Since his self-titled debut in 1970, the Canadian singer-songwriter has issued a steady stream of acclaimed albums every couple of years. But that output suddenly ran dry in 2011 following the release of Small Source of Comfort. There were good reasons for the drought. For one thing, Cockburn became a father again with the birth of his daughter Iona. Then there was the publication of his 2014 memoir Rumours of Glory. What spurred Cockburn back into songwriting was an invitation to contribute a song to a documentary film about the late, seminal Canadian poet Al Purdy and he was off to the races. Bone On Bone, Cockburn’s 33rd album, arrives with 11 new songs, including “3 Al Purdys,” a brilliant, six-minute epic that pays tribute to Purdy’s poetry.

Producer, remixer, DJ and Rinse FM host, Birmingham UK’s Chris Lorenzo is widely acknowledged for pioneering his hometown’s emergent and increasingly popular Jackin’ house come Bassline hybrid sound, which he terms simply “House & Bass”. Having built up specialist support with releases on a plethora of tastemaker labels, including Claude Von Stroke’s Dirtybird label and Shadow Child & Kry Wolf’s lauded Food Music label, Lorenzo has also been called upon to remix My Nu Leng for Black Butter and Disclosure for PMR. News of the Birmingham wunderkind has spread far and wide and in recent weeks, Lorenzo has seen both Skrillex and Steve Aoki come knocking at his door. Last month, Skrillex turned up unannounced at Lorenzo’s recent gig at Sound in Hollywood and duly whisked him off to his studio downtown to collaborate. Shows in Europe with Skrillex have followed and now Steve Aoki has personally requested Lorenzo’s magic touch on his new release “Delirous” feat. Kid Ink. Riding on the wave of his success, Lorenzo has now signed to Ultra Music and gets ready to release Signs, a collaboration with Hannah Wants that also features the vocal talents of Janai, whom many will know from her tracks with Dusky, Rack N Ruin and GotSome. With its beautiful melodies and a slightly deeper sound, Signs is the ultimate summer soundtrack and shows the duo still have so much more to show us. For the diehard fans however, Lorenzo has also produced a Roller mix of Signs, which incorporates the trademark elements of his distinctive, bassier sound. Set to lead the House & Bass movement in the US, Signs is the perfect debut release for Chris Lorenzo on Ultra Music, as he gets ready to work with the biggest dance label in the world to open up even more ears to his pioneering sound.

Samba Fogo proudly presents Xiré, an evening of original music and dance with George Edgar Brown and friends. Xiré (she-reh) is an exciting new collaboration between local composer George Edgar Brown and Samba Fogo. Premiering original compositions by Brown, coupled with choreography by Samba Fogo Artistic Director Lorin Hansen, Xiré is a folkloric adventure featuring an original score of incendiary Afro-Brazilian rhythms and dance combined with the smooth sound of traditional chamber orchestra and mixed vocal quartet. Xiré is a Yorùbá word that means “dance” or “dance circle.” In Brazil it is used to describe the songs and dances of the Orixá (o-ree-sha), nature spirits found in West African and African diasporic culture. With the forced movement of Africans to Brazil by Portuguese colonizers, the Orixá traveled also to the New World, surviving in part under the guise of Catholicism, as each Orixá was syncretised with a specific Catholic Saint. In the Brazilian religious tradition of Candomblé today, each Orixá is venerated through rich rhythms, songs, and dances representative of their distinct energy and characteristics. The Orixá and their wealth of tradition have continued to thrive to today – despite centuries of stigma and oppression – as an integral part of Brazil’s vibrant culture and artistic legacy. This live music and dance concert will take audiences on a journey, visiting sixteen unique Orixá through sixteen original pieces. Brown has paired Afro-Brazilian Candomblé rhythms with a traditional classical aesthetic – string quintet and vocal quartet – to blend both African and European influences with ancient and modern expressions. Brown’s compositions will be augmented by dancers portraying each Orixá, in ornate traditional costuming. Come enjoy this unique, creative blend of culture, sound, and movement on November 15 & 16 at 7:00pm the Eccles Blackbox Theater. The evening will open with an optional pre-reception “Talk Forward” with the composer and choreographer. In this reception, Brown and Hansen will speak about the process of creating Xiré and give insight into the show’s rhythms and dances, exploring their meaning and significance inside the rich traditions that inspire this concert. Tickets to Xiré are $20 for general public and $18 for students. Tickets are available online at https://artsaltlake.org/production/xire/, at all ArtTix locations, or by calling 801-355-ARTS. This event is recommended for ages 8+. No babes in arms. Content is suitable for all ages. For more information, please visit http://sambafogo.com/xire/
