Mary Anna Southey // South Salt Lake City Council, At-large // Grade: A
How have the arts, culture, and/or humanities impacted your life?
Answer: The arts have impacted me enormously as my father, Trevor Southey, was an artist who instilled an appreciation of design and beauty pretty much from birth! I worked with him as an adult, helping to manage his career by dealing with galleries, inventory control, and creative direction.
My husband and my brother have both been professional musicians who helped introduce me to the joys and concerns of the music and nightlife industries in San Francisco where we lived.
South Salt Lake is well positioned to be an arts center in Utah and our new downtown is thriving with music and color and community. Events like our Mural Fest (which I volunteered for) are part of the fabric of a healthy community.
Would you like to be considered for endorsement by Utah Cultural Alliance?
Answer: Yes
Utah's humanities and arts employ 112,000 Utahns, provide $4 billion in earnings, and $16 billion in sales. This is a larger economic impact than agriculture, mining, and real estate. Do you consider the arts and cultural sector an economic driver in Utah?
