RECORD NUMBER OF ADVOCATES GATHER AT ARTS ADVOCACY DAY AND RALLY AGAINST PRESIDENT'S PROPOSED BUDGET CUTS
On March 20-21, more than 700 people came to Washington, DC to attend events for the 30th annual Arts Advocacy Day and the Nancy Hanks Lecture on Arts and Public Policy. Advocates representing all 50 states, joined together on Monday for issue briefs and training during the day and a lecture that evening by Ford Foundation President Darren WalkerOn Tuesday, participants gathered on Capitol Hill to meet with their Congressional representatives, and were joined by special guests including Ben Vereen, Brian Stokes Mitchell, and Gabrielle Ruiz. Read more. (2017 Arts Advocacy Day attendees pictured)

SENATOR LISA MURKOWSKI RECEIVES CONGRESSIONAL ARTS LEADERSHIP AWARD
On March 21, Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski received the 2017 Congressional Arts Leadership Award from Americans for the Arts. Senator Murkowski has consistently supported the NEA and after-school programs that support arts education as an elected official and in her capacity as a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee and Chairman of the Subcommittee on Interior and Related Agencies. (Senator Murkowski pictured)

AMERICANS FOR THE ARTS MOURNS THE LOSS OF BUSINESS LEADER DAVID ROCKEFELLER
Philanthropist and business leader David Rockefeller died on March 20. Rockefeller was a champion for the arts and a prodigious patron, and helped create the Business Committee for the Arts. Robert L. Lynch, President and CEO of Americans for the Arts, said of him: "His ideas from 50 years ago were so prescient that they still guide our work in developing strong partnerships between the arts and business sectors today." (David Rockefeller pictured)

AMERICANS FOR THE ARTS MEMBERS CONTRIBUTE TO POLICYLINK'S "CREATING CHANGE THROUGH ARTS, CULTURE, AND EQUITABLE DEVELOPMENT" 
The report reflects on the positive impacts an investment in the arts and culture can have on community development and equity. Participants include members City of Chicago, Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events; City of Los Angeles, Department of Cultural Affairs; City of Seattle, Office of Arts and Culture; Miami-Dade County, Department of Cultural Affairs; Nashville Arts Commission; National Endowment for the Arts; San Francisco Arts Commission; and Arts Commission of Greater Toledo.

Roger Smith is retiring as the Executive Director of the Perry County Council of the Arts; Erika Juran will be his successor. Sherry Sissac is the new Deputy Director of the Regional Arts Commission in St. Louis, MO.
