Dear Valued Members & Supporters,

Happy New Year! 2017 is going to be an exciting year for the Kimball Art Center and a year full of growth and progress. In February, I will be transitioning from my current position to the Board of Directors as part of the long-range planning committee where I can focus all of my time on making our new building and vision for the future a reality. We have already begun a nationwide search for a new Executive Director to fill my role. In addition to this exciting news, January brings the kick-off of our new semester of classes, a new exhibition and, of course, the Sundance Film Festival.

We have expanded and diversified our class offerings this semester in the hopes to provide a creative outlet for every age, medium and experience level. I want to welcome the over 30 teachers who made this possible, several of whom are new to the Kimball.

Sundance Film Festival always brings an awakened spirit and energy to our mountain town. This year we are excited that our exhibition is closely tied to the Festival's history. Thirty-Three: Celebrating 33 Years of the Independent Spirit & Sundance Film Festival is curated by Morgan Spurlock with additional co-curation by Jensen Karp and Katherine Sutton of the esteemed Gallery1988 in Los Angeles. Thirty-Three celebrates 33 artists who are up-and-coming, edgy and pushing the boundary of their medium just as Sundance Film Festival has done for the past 33 years.

Finally, I want to congratulate and deeply thank Virginia Whitby and Darrell Bloomquist for their continued dedication to the Kimball Art Center. Please read more about each of them below.

Happy New Year to all of you and I cannot wait to see what this year brings for this Kimball Art Center!
Best Regards,
Robin
Annual Kimball Awards
"The Kimball Award" and the "Marilyn Eccles Modling Volunteer of the Year Award" were created in 2008 to annually honor the legacy and vision of the KAC founders. They are both chosen by the staff each year to honor distinguished service and recognize the two individuals that stood out over the calendar year for embodying the same spirit and passion toward the Kimball the institution was founded upon.
The Kimball Award – Virginia Whitby
"The Kimball Award" was created in memory of KAC Founder, William ("Bill") Kimball, whose vision and hard work resulted in the establishment of a nonprofit community art center with free admission that enriches the lives of Park City resident. The award seeks to highlight the efforts and accomplishments of an individual who displays unwavering dedication to the Kimball and allows the staff to best fulfill the KAC's mission. The 2016 recipient is Virginia Whitby, honored for her altruism and tireless hours planning and executing the inaugural "Celebration of the Arts" event at Red Cliff Ranch in July, 2016. This event was an extremely successful fundraiser for the Kimball Art Center and showcased exclusively Utah artists.
Marilyn Eccles Modling Volunteer of the Year Award – Darrell Bloomquist
"The Volunteer of the Year Award" was created in memory of Marilyn Eccles Modling who was not only William Kimball's childhood friend, but one of the founders of the Kimball and active volunteer for over a decade. This award is bestowed each year to the individual whose volunteer efforts went well beyond the norm and resulted in extraordinary impact on the community.
The 2016 recipient is Darrell Bloomquist. His dedication to the A.R.T.S. Tour program goes far and above what is expected of any volunteer and his passion for bringing art to the community is evident. When asked what volunteering with the Kimball means to him, Darrell responded, "I am given the opportunity to see first-hand the education and healing that art gives to the community. It means so much to me to be able to see the independence of each individual student and their creativity in their works of art."

Food for Thought:
Photographs by Christopher Boffoli
Café Gallery: January 19 – March 19
Christopher Boffoli's photographs feature tiny people in a world of big food. Begun in 2002 and inspired by the films and television shows of his childhood, the Big Appetites series has been published in more than 100 countries around the world, and featured in the New York TimesWashington Post, and Village Voice, among many more. His clever photographic vignettes evoke an uncanny likeness to the world at large and, while eminently humorous, also inspire deeper reflections of our relationship to food.
