Geoffrey Johnson to Kick Off Fall Art Insights

Written by Lola Taylor

Southern Utah University, Cedar City, Utah: Southern Utah University’s (SUU) Art & Design Department kicks off another year of Art Insights with Geoffrey Johnson. Johnson will be presenting on September 8 at the Southern Utah Museum of Art (SUMA), located at 13 S 300 W, at 7 pm. Admission is free, and the general public is invited to attend.

Geoffrey Johnson was born in 1965 in Greensboro, North Carolina, and graduated from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, where he received numerous awards and prizes for his artistic excellence. He began exhibiting his work in galleries and venues in 1995. His work now graces many private and corporate collections, including Coca-Cola, Turner Broadcasting, BellSouth, and Wachovia Bank.

During his Art Insights presentation, Johnson will talk about his work and the process he goes through when creating a painting. He is a contemporary impressionist painter that finds inspiration in first-hand observations. Johnson uses experiences from his travels, with a blend of his personal feelings about a situation, to capture his subjects. Reviewers of his work have noted his ability to capture an elegant sense of melancholy and timelessness in each painting.

Brian Hoover, a Professor of Art for SUU, said, “I got wind of Geoff from a student. I contacted his gallery and [Geoff replied] that he was interested in coming to speak to our students.” When asked about his most recent paintings centered on New York, Johnson said, “It doesn’t call for color. A limited palette brings more of the mood of the city out to me. More of how I feel about it.”

Art Insights is hosted during the fall and spring semesters by SUU’s Art & Design faculty. Students and community members meet to experience presentations and discussions by visiting artists and art educators from around the nation who share their work and insights.
