Barlow Bradford and Utah Chamber Artists’ winter concert takes place on Monday February 27th in Libby Gardner Concert Hall at 7:30 PM.  Entitled “The Fruit of Silence” the program highlights the music of Luigi Cherubini and Pēteris Vasks (pay-ter-is vohsks). Audiences will enjoy a variety of sounds that summon wonder, contemplation and peace.

Vasks believes “Music is an abstraction, yet sound is able to express the spirit.” He plays with the idea of sound and silence in the works presented in this concert. “Silent Songs” reflects on the profound attachment he has to his homeland and in “The Fruit of Silence” the composer implements a prayer of Mother Teresa that concludes with the sentence “The fruit of silence is prayer”.

The Cherubini Requiem is a prayer of the living for the dead who are now silent, quiet, and in tranquil repose. A relatively lesser-known composer, Luigi Cherubini was revered by Beethoven, Schubert and Brahms. Cherubini’s Requiem was one of the most highly regarded sacred works of its time.
