Happy Birthday, Harry Potter!

Salt Lake City Public Library to Host Daylong Event ‘Harry Potter’s Birthday Party’ on July 31

SALT LAKE CITY—July 31 is Harry Potter’s birthday, and the devoted Potterheads of the Salt Lake City Public Library are about to throw The Boy Who Lived his biggest birthday bash ever.

On Monday, the Main Library in downtown Salt Lake City will magically transform into a Harry Potter-themed party zone, with a full slate of games, contests, and fun activities planned all day long, including:

  • A Quidditch relay race to determine the fastest broomstick speedsters in SLC;

  • Cosplay contests to give kids, teens, and adults a chance to show off their on-point Potter garb;

  • A wand-making workshop to bring out participants’ inner Ollivander;

  • Trivia competitions to separate the wise wizards from the mere muggles;

  • A Care of Magical Creatures petting zoo;

  • And you better believe it: birthday treats will be served!

SLCPL has proudly joined forces with an impressive band of community partners for this event, including the Clark Planetarium, Mad Science, Hawkwatch International, the Utah Pony Party, and the Friends of The City Library. Additionally, attendees are encouraged to bring a pair of new socks to donate to the House Elf Sock Drive to benefit the Volunteers of America.

Harry Potter’s birthday takes on added significance this year: June 27 marked the 20th anniversary of the publication of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. A year later, the US edition was released under the title Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone—and Pottermania rages on to this day.
