October at the UMFA

Explore Land art icon Robert Smithson and his Utah masterpiece, Spiral Jetty (1970), with art historian Hikmet Loe on Wednesday, October 4, 7 pm, at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts (UMFA).
The event begins with a brief talk and reading by Loe from her new book, The Spiral Jetty Encyclo: Exploring Robert Smithson’s Earthwork Through Time and Place (University of Utah Press, 2017), followed by a screening of Smithson’s short film Spiral Jetty. A Q&A, book signing, and light refreshments follow.
The event is part of the UMFA’s ARTLandish: Land Art, Landscape, and Environment series and the Utah Humanities Book Festival. It is free and open to the public.

2017–18 NOVA Gallery Series
The Fry Street Quartet
Haydn and Bartók String Quartets, Part III
Sunday, October 8 | 3 pm | $25
The NOVA Gallery Series, a twice-yearly program of thoughtful and innovative chamber music performed by the state’s finest resident musicians, returns to the Utah Museum of Fine Arts (UMFA) this fall.
The October 8 concert features two of Haydn’s masterpieces in the string quartet genre, the stirring opus 76 No. 2 Quartet in D Minor, as well as opus 76 No. 4 in B-flat Major, nicknamed “Sunrise” for the beautiful rising melody heard in the opening bars of the piece. Also heard on this program is Bartók’s First String Quartet. A dazzling work of energetic rhythms and heart-wrenching melodies, Bartók’s first essay in the string quartet genre is an unqualified masterpiece.
