Southern Utah University, Cedar City, Utah: SUU’s Music Department presents an evening of Modern Masterpieces on Friday, October 7, 2016, at 7:30 pm at the Cedar City Heritage Center. This night of music features SUU’s Concert Choir, Opus and Women’s Choir, with special instrumentalists.

The concert will include music that is challenging, enriching and entertaining for both performer and audience alike. The centerpieces of this evening of powerful choral music include Leonard Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms and Ariel Ramirez’s Misa Criolla.

Steven Meredith, Associate Dean of the College of Graduate and Continuing Studies and Director of Choral Activities and Music Technology, said, “The Chichester Psalms by Leonard Bernstein is a marvelous work, and fun to do. But it does present some issues for singers. It is very angular and at times quite dissonant with intervals that are difficult to sing. When combined with regularly changing meters and the Hebrew text, it presents a real challenge to both mind and voice.”

Meredith continues, "Misa Criolla by Ariel Ramirez presents some similar difficulties, especially those related to changing meters and language (in this case, Spanish). But, as opposed to being angular and dissonant, this music is very melodic and consonant, and really just a bouncy and joyous celebration of the Mass that may be surprising for some audience members."

Vocal major Macey Naumann said, “I love singing this challenging music. Both pieces are different from each other, but really beautiful in their own way. These are the types of pieces that stay with you for a long time.”

Join us at the Cedar City Heritage Center on October 7th to hear these challenging pieces sung by the incredibly talented choirs from SUU. This is an evening of music you will not want to miss.
