Because of what I learned there as a kid, I was able to pursue creative goals with confidence, and have landed a well-paying, full-time job because of it. I cannot overstate how important Spy Hop was, and continues to be, for me.” — Spy Hop Alumni

Student Profile — Gnimdo Tako

Two years ago, Gnimdo started coming to Spy Hop on Friday afternoons for our drop-in recording session, Open Mic, where he learned how to make beats, record his songs and collaborate with other musicians to produce and perform. Last year Gnimdo made the leap from Open Mic to our intensive hip-hop program, Resonate. He has been a part of the Resonate program for the past year and has become an ambassador for Spy Hop.

Last April, Resonate students, including Gnimdo, were commissioned by fellow Adobe Creative Catalyst, Destiny Arts Center, to produce music for their Illuminate performance and for an original song called 3 Woke Girls. The students traveled to Oakland to see how their beats were used in the live performance.

Gnimdo was also invited to attend the Music & Youth Development Allianceconvening in Los Angeles, which brings together youth musicians from organizations across the United States for an intensive four days of collaboration, writing and performing. “I realized that your best music comes from working with others,” he told us when he returned.

Now a sophomore studying Chemical Engineering at The University of Utah, Gnimdo still spends time creating beats, writing lyrics and collaborating with the current Resonate crew, The Art Pack. You can catch their final performance on Wednesday, December 20th at Kilby Court!
