Bob Harlow, PhD is a social psychologist and statistician who helps organizations better understand their target audiences. He has partnered with some of the world’s leading companies and nonprofits to develop marketing and operations strategies. He has held senior and management positions at IBM and at market research consulting groups such as Yankelovich, and currently leads his own consulting organization. On June 28, Bob Harlow will be giving two talks on his books The Road to Results and Taking Out the Guesswork. Based on case studies of 10 arts and culture organizations that undertook audience-building projects as a part of The Wallace Foundation’s Wallace Excellence Award initiative, The Road to Results pinpoints nine successful practices those projects had in common. Cultivating new audiences and strengthening bonds with current attendees is a top priority for most arts and culture organizations. Yet even though audience research can help achieve those goals, many organizations shy away from it, often citing lack of money, time or skills to carry out the endeavor. Taking Out the Guesswork is based on the experiences of organizations that took part in a Wallace Foundation audience-building initiative and seeks to help organizations get over these hurdles.
