Lisa Sewell, Utah Arts Festival
Marc Weyerstall, Red Butte Garden & Arboretum, Salt Lake City
Crystal Young-Otterstrom, Utah Symphony & Opera, Salt Lake City
Crystal Young-Otterstrom is currently Audience Development Manager for
Utah Symphony & Opera and is constantly looking for ways to grow new
audiences for classical music and opera. While at US&O, Crystal has
successfully started Vivace, a funkified bunch of 20/30/40 somethings
(single, partnered, married) that just happen to get their groove on to
classical music and opera. Vivace has grown to over 800 members and is
now the largest group of its kind west of the Mississippi (all that in
less than 2 years!). Crystal's educational background is as a composer
and singer. Her works have been performed all over the United States.
She received a BA in Music Theory from Brigham Young University and
double MA's in Musicology and Composition from Queens College, NYC.
Although Crystal's academic studies focused on Schenker Theory, she
always had a strong interest in researching how to sell classical music
to young people and other alternative audiences (at least, "alternative" where classical music is concerned) - hence a career in Audience
Development has been very fulfilling and natural. In addition to being
on the UCA board, Crystal serves as a founding member of Opera America's
Young Professional Group Leaders Steering Committee, the marketing
committee for the Downtown Alliance, and is an active member of the Utah
Democratic Progressive Caucus.
