Artist Spotlight: Roger Whiting

Roger Whiting is a teaching and visual artist. Roger is involved in a number of  Art Access programs including our Integrated Arts Program, Adult Residencies, and community workshops.

Roger was first inspired to co-create murals with students during his first semester at Rhode Island School of Design in 2001. Roger took an art education course and after doing a site visit to watch a middle-school teacher instruct her class, had an idea to make a mural with her students. Roger returned on his own time to create a 4' x 8' mural with a few students from each of the school's classes.

Since then, Roger has been organizing and implementing dozens of mural and mosaic projects with nonprofit organizations and schools, many of which are structured as classes to teach youth the creative process (from brainstorming to planning to creation).

Roger is involved in a variety of projects in Salt Lake City as well. You have likely seen his works in community gardens and centers across the city. Roger recently completed a mural for local youth organization Matt's Place and a  sensory wall at the Hogle Zoo created in partnership with students at Matt's Place.
